I decided at a the tender age of 8 that I wanted to be a nurse "when I grew up" and so, that's what I did.
I completed my training to become a general nurse at the age of 21 before deciding to do my midwifery certificate so that I could work as a community midwife as opposed to in a hospital. In 1987 I made the decision to come to Switzerland for a year... to ski...and learn French...and work. I worked in private clinics in Lausanne until 1996 when I decided to join the International Committee of the Red Cross. For my first mission, I worked for a year in Afghanistan as a midwife in a war hospital. It was there that I met my husband (as a foreign woman I had to be chaperoned by one of my male co-workers when I went out...he still doesn't like shopping with me!). We went on to Rwanda then Congo-Brazzaville for two further missions before coming "home" and getting married in 2000. My two sons, born in 2001 and 2005, and my husband are the centre of my life. But I have a love for midwifery and the possibility to help new families adapt to life after the arrival of their newborn child gives me great pleasure. I am also a qualified lactation consultant (IBCLC). At present I am studying to become a 1001 babynights sleep therapist. |
